Ian was the managing director of Scantec Industries (Int.) Pty Ltd and its various legal entities since 1980 until deregistering the company in 2017.
The name Scantec was first coined by Ian in 1980 whilst he was working with the RAAF as a trainee radio and telecommunications technician and moonlighting as a light/sound technician and roadie in the then vibrant Melbourne live music scene.
“Scan” was a reference to the lights scanning across the stage and “tec” was simply an abbreviation of technical, hence Scantec was born.
Scantec Industries went on to become one of the most respected names in the specialist electrical contracting field of leisure and commercial marine electrical installations and was engaged on many projects ranging from small recreational craft right through to world cruising super yachts. These installations were installed compliant to many varying standards including a number of classification societies.
Being apprenticed to Norris Electrics was a real boon for Ian as he gained experience in many facets of the electrical industry from basic house wiring through factories, shopping centres, high rise, manufacturing industry (both Ford and GMH) right through to inter-country shipping, mining, refineries, offshore oil rigs and power stations.
Upon completion of his apprenticeship, Ian registered Scantec Industries and commenced his own electrical contracting business. Despite Scantec servicing many mainstream electrical installations, the company direction tended to drift towards the transport sector with both the leisure and commercial boating industry playing a large part, along with emergency services vehicles and specialist mining equipment which unintentionally complemented his career beginnings in the aviation sector.
